Did you know that San Antonio is one of the most popular cities in the United States? I mean, it makes sense because it’s got a little bit of everything for everyone. You’ve got your history buffs, your nature enthusiasts, your foodies, and your party animals. Plus, it’s such a welcoming city with a really diverse population. No wonder people are drawn to it! If you’re thinking of taking a trip to San Antonio, or if you’re just curious about what all the fuss is about, then read on. I’ll give you some tips on what to see and do in this amazing city.
Here are Just a Few Reasons why San Antonio is so Great
1. San Antonio’s History
San Antonio is rich in history and tradition—something that can’t be found in many other places. Dating back to the 1700s, Spanish settlers began using the area as a military fort and mission site due to its prime location along major travel routes. Many historic events transpired here: from pirate attacks and revolts within the fort, to the Battle of the Alamo (1836) and its aftermath during the Texas Revolution. Because of this colorful heritage, San Antonio has been named a “World Heritage City” by UNESCO for its historical significance; it also has 19 historical sites registered on the National Register of Historic Places.
2. Fiesta Navidad
In early December, San Antonians rejoice during the 6-day Fiesta Navidad celebration. The public Christmas festival kicks off with an official tree lighting ceremony at the historic San Fernando Cathedral, followed by a stunning fireworks display after nightfall. Visitors can also enjoy live concerts (both inside and outside the cathedral), dancing, arts & crafts exhibits, parades, and even moonlight tours of downtown hotspots like La Villita.
3. Shopping
From upscale boutiques to outlet malls to flea markets, San Antonio is packed with places where shoppers can find whatever they’re looking for (and maybe things they weren’t). One of the city’s main shopping attractions is The Rim, located in nearby northwest San Antonio; it contains more than 200 stores spread out over 5 major outdoor plazas. Not only that, but Fiesta Texas, a popular amusement park/theme-park resort, includes a mall of its own with over 40 stores!
4. Museums
In the mood for learning? In San Antonio, there are plenty of museums to absorb all kinds of interesting facts and information about science, history, culture and more. Some examples include the Witte Museum (dedicated to natural sciences & history), The Briscoe Western Art Museum (featuring paintings from renowned historical artists like Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell), and the McNay Art Museum (housed in a Spanish Renaissance Revival style mansion).
5. Dining
When it comes to good food in San Antonio, you can practically throw a stick in any direction and hit a restaurant that serves up something delicious. The city is well-known for its Tex-Mex cuisine, but it also has a rich German heritage which can be seen in dishes like sausages and schnitzel. All kinds of cuisines are represented here, from Greek to Indian to Thai; some popular restaurants include Biga on the Banks (featuring upscale coastal Mexican fare), Chez Vatel Bistrot (serving French cuisine at its finest) and Lüke (home of the original one-page menu).
6. Sports
“Hey, what about sports?” you ask? Well, San Antonio is home of several professional teams! These include the NBA’s Spurs, the NHL’s Rampage, and the Missions (the AA minor league baseball team for the Padres). San Antonio is also home to several NCAA universities; elite teams from these schools include the UTSA Roadrunners (a member of Conference USA) and the Incarnate Word Cardinals (who play in Division I’s Southland Conference).
7. San Antonio Botanical Garden
Finally, no matter what time of year it is, there’s always something to enjoy at one of San Antonio’s most popular attractions: the San Antonio Botanical Garden. Situated along 3.5 serene acres (just minutes away from downtown), this unique attraction features numerous themed gardens with both native and exotic plants and flowers: a desert garden an herb garden, a cactus garden, a rose garden and so much more.
