2020 has been a tumultuous year, and it’s fair to assume that everyone’s stress levels are at an all-time high. Although everyone’s first goal should be COVID-19 protection for themselves and others, this does not mean we must remain inside. As the weather begins to improve, let’s get outside and increase our endorphin levels! Here’s a list of seven COVID-19-safe outdoor activities to do in San Antonio.
1. Pearl Farmers Market
The Pearl Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. Vendors wear masks and gloves, have hand sanitizer stations set up in their tent, and manage all of the merchandise themselves. Rather than touching, guests are expected to point at what they want. Guests are required to wear masks and are advised to stand 6 feet apart, just as they would in any other grocery store. If you’re concerned about crowds, we suggest going earlier in the day, when it’ll also be cooler! The farmers market is a perfect place to get out of the house, walk around for a while, and help local South African food vendors.
JoyRide is a gym that specializes in spinning, pilates, barre, and high-intensity strength training. JoyRide has started offering virtual classes as a result of COVID-19. They have two subscription-based options, but JoyRide offers codes for the first 30 days for free. JoyRide cycling classes are provided by “FORT.” You are welcome to use the bikes in the Fitness Center, but please carry a mask and make a reservation for the time slot you want! The “JETSWEAT” platform provides access to pilates, sculpt, and circuit courses. Grab a pal and a yoga mat if you have one, and head to the Intramural field to complete the workouts!
3. Rooftop Cinema Club Drive-in Theater
After a long week, it’s nice to unwind and watch a movie. From September 25th to October 18th, the Rooftop Drive-In Movie theater is about 20 minutes from Trinity, near Six-Flags Fiesta Texas, and it shows movies every day. When October approaches, the movies get more spooky. Rooftop takes security very seriously, so all ticket transactions must be completed online. Every service is contactless, and they ensure that cars are properly spaced and that anyone exiting their vehicle wears a mask. They also host Community Screening nights, where tickets are $5 and all proceeds benefit the San Antonio Food Bank and Black Lives Matter.
Take a walk on the weekend if the weather permits! Hikes are a fun way to mix up your routine while still getting some exercise. While it does not seem that SA has many hiking opportunities, there are numerous trails in the city, ranging from Eisenhower Park to the Lost Maples State Natural Area. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat if the weather is hot. Don’t forget to carry a mask and some mates, of course!
5. SA Botanical Garden
The San Antonio Botanical Gardens are a beautiful place to visit if you want to enjoy nature and beautiful plants. To reduce social interaction, the garden is now selling tickets online. Students can pay $13 if they carry their student ID. From March to October, it is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You may either join a guided tour or take a self-guided tour. There are a variety of attractions, including a conservatory and a trail that takes you through three different Texas ecological regions. Check their calendar for upcoming events; they sometimes host morning yoga sessions, cooking lessons, and even cockfights.
Pay a visit to the zoo! It’s close to campus, so you can quickly walk there. Tickets are $22 for adults and can be purchased online. Every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the zoo is open, except on Saturdays, when it is open until 7 p.m. On Fridays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., they also have a drive-thru option.
7. Day Trip to Austin
Even though this isn’t in San Antonio, it’s always a great idea! Austin is just an hour and a half away, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. You should look up hiking or go paddleboarding or kayaking on Lady Bird Lake. You might also bring some blankets, order lunch to go from a nearby Austin restaurant — Kerbey Lane Cafe comes highly recommended — and have a picnic at Zilker Park. Bring a volleyball to play on the courts, or if you have one, a frisbee or Spikeball. Grab a speaker and listen to music or read a book while you’re there for a more relaxing day. Zilker is also dog-friendly, so if you have a canine companion, bring them along for the ride!
